Getting licensed is more straightforward than most people expect. Here's the full path from start to license in hand.
Submit your application at the Texas DPS Handgun Licensing site. Takes about 10 minutes. You'll pay the state fee at the end and get an email to schedule fingerprinting.
Schedule an appointment at an IdentoGO location using the link DPS emails you. The appointment itself takes just a few minutes.
A minimum of 4 hours of classroom instruction covering Texas law, non-violent dispute resolution, safe storage, and handgun use — followed by a written exam and the shooting proficiency demonstration at the range. You'll leave with your LTC-100 certificate of completion.
Upload your LTC-100 to DPS. Once your background check clears, DPS aims to issue your license within 60 days of a completed application packet — often sooner.
